Managed IT vs Ad Hoc IT Support

Ad hoc IT and managed IT solve different problems. Ad hoc support is useful when a business only needs occasional technical assistance. Managed IT is designed for organisations that want technology continuously monitored, maintained, secured and documented.

Ad hoc IT support

With ad hoc support, you pay when work is requested. It can suit very small businesses with limited technology dependence or businesses that already have strong internal IT capability.

From 1 November 2026, MWITS standard ad hoc support is $180 per hour including GST, with a one-hour minimum for remote or onsite support.

Managed IT services

Managed IT shifts the emphasis from individual jobs to continuous technology management. Depending on scope, this can include helpdesk, endpoint management, patching, Microsoft 365, cybersecurity, backup, network management, onboarding/offboarding, documentation and planning.

MWITS managed IT starts from $115 per user per month.

Where the models differ

  • Ad hoc: reactive, job-by-job and variable spend.
  • Managed: ongoing maintenance, visibility and predictable scope.
  • Ad hoc: problems are generally addressed when reported.
  • Managed: monitoring and maintenance can identify issues before users report them.
  • Ad hoc: appropriate when technology risk and complexity are low.
  • Managed: better suited to multi-user businesses that depend heavily on IT.
