Windows Server 2016 End of Support Readiness

Windows Server 2016 is approaching the end of extended support in January 2027. Businesses still relying on Server 2016 should identify affected workloads now rather than waiting until the deadline becomes an emergency project.

What may still be running on Server 2016?

  • Active Directory domain controllers.
  • File and print servers.
  • Remote Desktop Services.
  • Line-of-business applications.
  • SQL or application servers.
  • Hyper-V hosts or virtual machines.
  • Legacy vendor software that has never been migrated.

Why end of support matters

Once a server platform is outside normal support, security and compatibility risk increases and future application upgrades can become more difficult. The correct response is not necessarily “replace the server”; the workload may be better upgraded, consolidated, moved to Microsoft 365/Azure, replaced with SaaS, or retired.
